How to apt update system packages the right way on PiMP

  • Staff

Ever login to your rig and see some system updates available?

If you want to download these updates, it should be possible. You just want to make sure that the files we customized do not get overwritten, or something may break. Example:

You run: apt update && apt upgrade and you see it running through and updating the system packages:

Then all of a sudden you see something like this:

==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
        Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
        N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
    *** issue (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

Default and the correct thing to do is answer N or No to all of the questions it asks during the update. And usually you will want to reboot after running system updates, especially if they have new major upgrades to the kernel or compiler libraries.

In PIMP 3.0 and above, the above applies, but in addition, apt upgrade will also update pimp software, default confs, and any miners which have auto-update on. (Default is on. You can use pimpup to turn auto-update off for any miner.)
