gputool: How to Overclock NVIDIA and AMD GPUs

  • When I run gputool --config on a properly edited json file, I'm getting:
    (...)
    Set Core clockto 1100 MHz on GPU 0
    ERROR: Unable to read header from file.

  • Staff

    Doesn't sound properly edited. What did you use to create and edit the file?

  • Hi, I removed the file, I run gputool --config, I edited it with nano changing only the frequency values, I checked it with jsonlint, and I run gputool --config again.

  • My whole /root/gpu-config.json looks like this:
    {
    "comment": "Please see...",
    "gpuSettings": [
    {
    "gpu_id": "0",
    "AMDCoreClk": "1100",
    "AMDMemClk": "1100",
    "AMDPtune": "7",
    "fanspeed": "90",
    "temptarget": "70"
    }
    ]
    }

  • gputool v20171213, 1x R9 390, pimp v2.3.30-amd

  • Staff

    Ah, it is entirely possible that the 390 is not correctly implemented in AMD's AMDGPU driver. You may need to use pimp 1.9 for that older gear and then set the clocks using the old method inside the configuration file (using the miner itself) (THE GOOD OLD DAYS)

  • Thank you, Melt. I'm just curious about one more thing. I can live without overclocking the R9 390 because it gives me 29.8 MH/s anyway. However, I wonder if I can mix R9 390s with RX 470s and RX 570s in one v2.3.30 rig and if I'll be able to OC the later cards if I simply skip instructions related to R9 GPUs (their IDs) from the gpu-config.json file.

  • Staff

    Hey md. You should be able to do this, if not, 2.4.1 is even more mix-and-match friendly and perhaps it would work on that.

  • I wish I knew how these settings worked so I could overclock my card

  • We recommend using an existing thread:

  • Running 4x 1070ti, was able to do +650 memory, +75 core clock @ approx 50% fan speed on avg. on Afterburner back when I was running NiceHash in windows, any suggestions? currently haven't messed with it and getting 2.45 Kh/s on xmrpool.

  • When I attempt to update the GPU's using gputool I get the following errors and the changes are not applied. Root seems to have permissions issues.

    Configuring 5 GPUs..
    Set Fan speed to 100% on GPU 1
    Set PowerTune to dpm state 7 on GPU 1
    Set Core clock to 1200 Mhz on GPU 1
    Set Memory clock to 1800 Mhz on GPU 1
    sh: 1: cannot create /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level: Permission denied
    sh: 1: cannot create /sys/class/drm/card1/device/pp_dpm_sclk: Permission denied
    Set PowerTune to dpm state 7 on GPU 2
    Set Core clock to 1200 Mhz on GPU 2
    ERROR: Error opening /sys/class/drm/card1/device/pp_table (are you root, and does it exist?)
    Set PowerTune to dpm state 7 on GPU 3
    Set Core clock to 1200 Mhz on GPU 3
    Set Memory clock to 1800 Mhz on GPU 3

  • @mgarciastroope Overclocking and fan controls for Nvidia/AMDGPU are done using gputool. Here is the post guide for gputool: [ merged into this article ]

  • @bneyjr what cards do you use?

  • My stable config.

    nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Temp: 53C, Fan: 60%, Core Clock: 2012 Mhz (40 Offset), Memory Clock: 4404 Mhz (1200 Offset), Performance state: 2, Power Usage: 110.1W (120W Max)

  • i have nvidias 1080ti

    when i use config
    "NVCOffset": "100",
    "NVMOffset": "0",
    "NVPLimit": "250",
    "fanspeed": "70",
    "temptarget": "70"

    it set fanspeed to 98%

    when i use config
    "NVCOffset": "100",
    "NVMOffset": "0",
    "NVPLimit": "250",
    "fanspeed": "auto",
    "temptarget": "70"

    it write that "auto" is not numeric value.

    what I do wrong? thanks

  • Why doesn't my gpu1 overclock settings apply as the rest of the cards? https://photos.app.goo.gl/wZXTlQ8nRrbIHMa62 - nvm got help via discord. If someone else stumble over this. You need to disable onboard GPU in bios. Then you can overclock all cards with the guide above.
