Optiminer will not use SSL? Solution and tips!

  • Staff

It has been reported that Optiminer examples for using SSL are not working.

Various pool report addresses for Optiminer that look like this:

    ZecMiner64.exe -zpool ssl://eu1-zcash.flypool.org:3443 -zwal t1YZMnyXStuGKykkFxM6Lh8DTVJdTMx6R51.YourWorkerName -zpsw x

The problem is that Optiminer has decided to use differing methods of declaring an SSL pool for Windows vs Linux. We know this can be confusing, and must admit we were confused a bit ourselves, as we used the pool examples to build the example configurations. So you might see examples like this for Optiminer zcash:

    # suprnova SSL/TLS connection:
    # POOL1=ssl://zec.suprnova.cc:2242
    # USER1=YourLogin.YourWorkerName
    # PASS1=YourWorkerPassword
    # miningpoolhub SSL/TLS connection (auto-detects, same port for unencrypted connection):
    # POOL1=ssl://us-east.equihash-hub.miningpoolhub.com:20570
    # USER1=YourLogin.YourWorkerName
    # PASS1=YourWorkerPassword

Checking the Optiminer documentation for Linux, we find the following information:

    Secure connection
Since version 1.0.0, the miner supports ZStratum protocol over TLS to encrypt the connection to the mining pool. Currently, this is only supported with some pools, e.g., flypool and supernova.
Use zstratum+tls:// as prefix to the pool address, e.g.,
    $ ./optiminer-equihash -s zstratum+tls://eu1-zcash.flypool.org:3443 -a equihash200_9 \
                           -u t1Yszagk1jBjdyPfs2GxXx1GWcfn6fdTuFJ.example -p password

Our apologies for missing this fine print with Optiminer docs. As well, please ignore pools that advise you to simply call it out as ssl://pool.name.here, this advice is wrong for Optiminer. It is not the fault of our team, or pool documentation, that Optiminer chooses to implement that URL handling in a unique way.

As noted in the documentation, not all pools respect this implementation. You can try using zstratum+tls:// in the place of ssl://, and see if it works for your pool of choice. If not, please simply revert to using just the hostname and wallet address as normal.

Our thanks go to frank@discord for bringing up this issue with using SSL with Optiminer and flypool in particular. Keep on reporting folks!

    Good luck and happy mining!
