For GUI doesn't start issues....
For the 'gui dosnt start' issues...
Coach users to unplug the video cable and move it around a bit first. Also make sure they rebooted at least twice (ie, first reboot to blank screen, but ssh works. Reboot again to be sure all X config changes get reread).
Just removing an HDMI presented video, and plugging it right back in has worked for me as well when enabling the amdgpu.dc drivers. A full power cycle can help tween that second reboot asked for above.
And yes... there are other ways we can force X to refresh itself, but for users sake, its faster and easier to just power cycle the boxen.
The changes in DRM cause things to get wonky with HDMI though, cause HDMI cares about how DRM is done... just unplugged an HDMI display, and plugging it back in, causes the stack to refresh.
Be aware that the changes in DRM code tween the two differing AMDGPU drivers sets will mean a power cycle of the monitor (or plug, unplug) may be required in all cases.
Just notes from the peanut gallery.
Adding in this helpful post that seems to unbreak this for many.
Seems to impact AMD only? Easier to fix if you update the rigs '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file. Find the Device lines, and change it like this:
Then restart X, or just reboot the box.
And... One more tidbit.
This has worked for me on more than one occasion. Simply ask the client to:
X will reconfigure by boot detect next round.
rm /tmp/gpu* will REQUIRE an immediate reboot, as this breaks every tool.
